QR codes are QI
As Stephen Fry once said, “That’s quite interesting!” In this case he was speaking about QR codes not his long running panel show.
QR or ‘Quick Response’ codes are quite interesting and seem to be featuring in every press advertisement, bus stop poster or product packaging seen in the UK at the moment. These blocky, squared-off-bar code type patterns are interpreted by an ‘App’ on the readers Smartphone linking them quickly and directly to the content they are interested in. Meeting two demands of modern day living: our need for a quick response and our hunger for information.
By definition these codes allow a quick, direct response to any message; typically a promotional message but also detailed descriptions of how to carry out CPR or the rules of badminton.
Duraweld has used QR codes in all its advertising for the last 18 months. The QR code links the reader directly to the Build Your Own they offer which allows users to order a completely customised ring binder, document box, tax disc holder or travel card holder. Visitors, who have used the service after scanning the QR code, are easily identifiable and measurable. Free analysis tool, Google Analytics, shows the source of every visitor to the Duraweld site and the amount they spent during their visit. Take-up is slow but building.
On a corporate level a QR code is used on the foot of all corporate promotional items such as the Duraweld calendar. The QR code serves as a quick and direct link to the Duraweld home page. The calendar keeps their products and service front of mind; the QR code allows customers to action a need and move to the next stage in the sales process.
On 19th April 2012 the IPIA are running an event entitled ‘How innovative media can drive competitive advantage’. Members will learn more from Lance Hill of 4DM about how these useful little codes can add below the line advantage to above the line promotions; as well as how Apps and funky 3D printing can really add value for your business. Now that’s Quite Interesting.
