Lessons from a tatty Oyster Card Holder

A very tatty oyster card holder

What started as a functional protection for the touch-in touch-out oyster card has become something of a fashion statement. As I looked at my tatty London Underground issued Oyster Card holder (which as testament to its durability dates back to 2003) I realised that despite it’s appearance, it’s done its job pretty well. It’s not only protected the card, but I must have looked at it thousands of times.

Surely that’s a marketer’s dream, an opportunity to remind the holder about your brand at least four times a day as the average commuter winds their way to and from the office. Especially when these days the same style of travel card holder is used far beyond the Capital, with commuters on trains, buses and trams all around the country clutching similar things.

Of course, looking at some of the flashier versions other travellers were holding made me realise that mine is probably in need of an update, which makes it an ideal opportunity for someone other than London Underground to give me a clean, smart, new one.

Nice smart travel card holder!
