Duraweld Suppliers attend their Environmental Workshop
As part of an initiative by Groundwork, Duraweld is hosting an environmental workshop for a group of suppliers on Tuesday 17 August.
It is just one of the ways we can confirm to our customers that we are serious about environmental issues and we are keen that those who supply goods and services to us are also like minded.
As part of the workshop Victoria Pitts, who heads the Duraweld green team, will be undertaking a factory tour to highlight best practice and how we have made inroads into reducing waste and energy use over the past couple of years. Suppliers will see first hand how we manufacture our recycled document boxes, ring binders and travel card holders.
For example, between 2008 and 2009 we reduced:
Electricity Kwh usage by 18%
Gas Kwh usage by 20%
Water usage by 3%
Skips sent to landfill by 30%
A4 office paper usage/purchased by 29%
To find out more about our environmental commitments see our environment page.

Duraweld awarded twice for environmental achievements

Jane Harper, Duraweld
Duraweld is celebrating two new accolades for its commitment to environmentally friendly business practices this week, as it features in the third annual edition of The Sunday Times Best Green Companies list and scoops one of the top prizes in the Binding Industries Association (BIA) Awards.
Competing against companies from across the US in the BIA Awards ‘Product of Excellence’ category, Duraweld entered a specially designed travel card holder made from their own 100% recycled polypropylene. The company adapted its standard vinyl travel card product using sonic welding instead of a heat sealing manufacturing process, producing wallets which were both environmentally and ethically sound, as well as attractive and durable. The unique design has been registered.
The BIA Judges commented: “We were very impressed with the design and use of materials. The travel card holder is creative, very practical and it really stood out amongst the other entries.”
In The Sunday Times, Duraweld was ranked 39 out of 60 companies throughout the UK, and featured in the Top Ten for having the ‘greenest employees’. According to the Times, “…competition for places in the Top 60 was intense and the quality of entries very high. Only those organisations demonstrating the highest environmental standards, with workforces wholly engaged and in tune with their green initiatives, have made it onto the list.”
Victoria Pitts, Durawelds’ Green Team leader said: “It is very rewarding to have our green initiatives and products recognised by both these organisations and it positions us as being up there amongst the best in employing environmentally friendly business practices. Our commitment to protecting the environment remains firm and we will continue to improve and develop both our internal processes and our recycled product ranges.”
These two new accolades support Duraweld’s ISO 14001 accreditation and carbon zero status.

Duraweld share lean manufacturing experience with Americans

Binding Edge
Customers of UK ring binder and plastic stationery manufacturer Duraweld have benefited from their use of lean manufacturing techniques for four years. This month their American peers have been learning about the benefits in top trade publication ‘Binding Edge’.
In a magazine which features Duraweld owners Mark Yeung and Hannah Senior on the front cover, Duraweld’s production manager, Jamie Swan is interviewed by Binding Edge, revealing at length the process he introduced into the manufacturing company; the benefits it brought and the process he went through to establish it.
Duraweld regularly opens their doors to organisations wishing to learn from their experiences. On 3rd March eight people visited the site as part of the Inside Industry initiative hosted by The Manufacturing Advisory Service, and on 25th May 12 printers from New Zealand will visit as part of a UK study tour with Print Yorkshire. This extensive article is a further demonstration of how Duraweld wants to share their expertise to the benefit of the manufacturing industry as a whole.

Award won By Richard Senior from Duraweld
Richard Senior, owner and director of Duraweld, has been awarded life-long membership of the BAPC (British Association for Print and Communication) in recognition of his dedicated services to the print industry. Announced at the Associations’ annual conference in Buckinghamshire last Saturday, Richard was presented with a specially engraved glass award to commemorate the event.
